After her first cardiac arrest, Shavini Fernando was told by a doctor in her native Sir Lanka that the blood pressure in her lungs was so great that the 33-year-old only had two years to live.

That was in 2015, a full seven years before she launched Oxiwear, an ear-worn oximeter that continuously measures oxygen levels and can send alerts, first to the wearer and then to emergency medical services, when it drops. And the path there required indomitable spirit, dogged persistence and a serendipitous grounding near Georgetown University, where Ted Leonsis took an interest and wrote her first investment check.

Arlington’s OxiWear is a finalist for a national health accelerator

Arlington, Virginia’s OxiWear is the latest local company making noise around the country.

The startup, which developed a wearable for vital monitoring and emergency alerts, was selected as a finalist for the American Heart Association’s EmPOWERED to Serve Business Accelerator. The accelerator is open to startups and nonprofits making an impact in health, and a public vote is taking place for OxiWear to secure funding.

Shavini Fernando traveled from Sri Lanka to the U.S. in 2015 seeking a second opinion on a heart condition. She was told she had severe pulmonary hypertension, a diagnosis that would keep her from returning home.

Instead, Fernando, who has survived four cardiac arrests and three strokes, created her own solution for managing her condition. She developed and founded OxiWear, a wearable device for the ear that monitors blood-oxygen levels and alerts the wearer when they drop, a tool she uses now to prevent cardiac arrest.

At 33, Shavini Fernando was given just two years to live—the result of a late-diagnosed hole in her heart, which caused her to develop a life-threatening condition called Eisenmenger syndrome. The Sri Lanka native, who came to the US to seek treatment at Johns Hopkins, was told by doctors that she couldn’t fly, meaning she wasn’t able to return home—or live alone. Patients such as Fernando often put their lives on hold, because routine activities like climbing stairs or even environmental factors like heat and humidity can cause their oxygen levels to plummet dangerously without notice.
